Polaris is the North Star, currently situated almost exactly at the celestial north pole, and thus instrumental in the art of astronavigation. Likely because of this, its namesakes include a number of marine vessels and aeroplanes, as well as the first sub-launched ballistic missile fielded by the United States, the United Kingdom's first submarine-based nuclear weapons programme, and an Israeli reconnaissance satellite.
But above all, Polaris is the North Star, 400-some light years away from Earth, unaware of all of that.
